Pressing On: “but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” Phil 3:12. Eternal life is not handed to me, it also is not something I earn. My “pressing forward” is my faith with good deeds attached as proof of that faith in the books of heaven. Christ Jesus has taken hold of it for me, eternal life and perfection. It doesn’t say that He hands it over but we must be consumed with going that direction, “forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead” (v.13). When I was saving to buy a car, my parents eventually gave me one they already had as a gift, but it was important for them to see me saving and working towards it even though I could have never afforded the Infiniti they gave me. In our daily lives, we should not be discouraged that we have not yet obtained perfect patience, the feelings of heaven or blessings-beyond-belief because we are “pressing” towards these things only to attain them in our pursuit of Christ and realized at His Second Coming. Christ already obtained this for us, but we must still run the race of our lives showing that we love Him and want what He has for us.
